MATCHUP OVERVIEW

Watch the walk behind Kikoken, not just the projectile

Chun-Li combines fast walking with Kikoken to change the distance while you are occupied with a projectile. The important question is where she will be when you finish blocking it. Her approach can become a strike, a throw, or a retreat that makes your throw-tech attempt miss. Separate that moving situation from her prepared pressure after Spinning Bird Kick or Tensho Kicks.

What to watch for

Light Kikoken with Chun-Li walking behind it

Her setplay guide pairs this projectile with a walk into standing medium punch, throw, or a backward-walking shimmy. Keep track of her position as well as the fireball. Dealing with the projectile does not automatically deal with the character following it.

Serenity Stream after a corner knockdown

The corner Tensho Kicks setup includes a stance overhead, an exit from stance into crouching light kick, and a wait into throw against parry. Recognize the stance, but keep watching for the follow-up instead of choosing your guard solely from the stance animation.

Air-combo enders and jump timing

Chun-Li has recorded safe-jump setups in the combo guide, with conditions tied to the air-combo ending and landing height. A jump aimed at your wake-up is not necessarily an invitation to use a reversal. Check the actual ender before judging whether your reversal should have worked.

How to deal with common situations

Kikoken reaches you as Chun-Li closes in

Defend the projectile while watching how far she follows it. If she reaches throw range, include throw in your next decision; if she walks back out, do not chase her with an automatic throw-tech input. Add her walk and next action to your training recording. Practicing against Kikoken alone leaves out the part that creates the close-range problem.

Spinning Bird Kick ends her combo

After medium Spinning Bird Kick, the guide uses a dash followed by walking throw, standing medium punch, or walk-back shimmy. Grounded and airborne enders have different timing. Start with the version that knocked you down, then compare the strike and throw branches. A defensive timing learned after an airborne light ender is not a universal answer.

A forward throw leaves you in the corner

The existing Chun-Li notes distinguish this from an automatic repeat-throw setup: walking throw does not immediately cover the wake-up in the listed situation. She still has crouching heavy punch and a short walk into a wait or throw. Test the gap against those alternatives rather than turning “no automatic throw loop” into permission to press on every wake-up.

Distance-specific responses

Far: measure the space she gains

Watch whether Chun-Li stays back after Kikoken or follows it. Avoid giving up extra ground merely because a projectile is on screen. The next useful position is one where you can see both the projectile arrival and her approach, rather than focusing on a fireball that has already passed.

Mid-range: account for the walk

Her quick movement can put a normal in range sooner than expected. Choose your attack from her current position, not where she was when she threw Kikoken. Practice a short advance and retreat against one recorded normal before attempting a long, committed approach.

Close: identify how she got here

A walk behind Kikoken, a Spinning Bird Kick knockdown, and a corner stance setup do not share one defensive timing. Name the entry first. Then choose between blocking the strike, avoiding the throw, or waiting out the retreat that baits your button.

Common mistakes

  • Watching Kikoken so closely that Chun-Li reaches throw range without you noticing.
  • Treating every Serenity Stream animation as the same overhead, even when she exits into a low or waits.
  • Using a reversal against every wake-up jump without checking whether the recorded air-combo ender sets up a safe jump.
  • Assuming every Hundred Lightning Kicks version is equally punishable. The light, medium, heavy, OD, and OD follow-up entries are different.

Training mode practice steps

Use your own character as the defender. Turn on the frame meter and input history so you can distinguish a real answer from a mistimed recording.

  1. Record the person behind the fireball

Use light Kikoken, walk forward, then record three endings: standing medium punch, throw, and walk back into crouching medium punch. Adjust the starting distance until the fireball and approach resemble your match. Randomize the endings and note whether the projectile or the follow-up caused each hit.

  2. Separate the corner stance branches

Recreate the corner heavy-Tensho-Kicks airborne ender from her combo guide. Record the stance overhead, stance exit into crouching light kick, and stance exit into wait-and-throw. Confirm each recording works on its own before mixing them. Include the exit animation in your recognition practice.

  3. Test one wake-up jump against your reversal

Choose one complete air-combo-to-jump setup from the linked combo page. Keep the ender and timing fixed, and compare blocking with your character’s reversal. If the reversal is blocked, inspect the landing and frame meter rather than shortening the recording until it gives the result you wanted.

Chun-Li’s Kikoken approaches, stance branches, and wake-up examples come from the existing Japanese assessment and combo guide. Air-combo height and recovery choices are part of the setup, so the examples are practice targets rather than universal defensive timings. For current numerical values, use the linked Frame Data page and confirm important situations in Training Mode.
