PLAYING MAI

Character overview

Mai uses Kachousen to support an approach, then turns a confirmed opening into carry and a follow-up. Her boosted specials add a resource-dependent layer. Learn an ordinary-state route first and distinguish grounded from airborne Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi finishes before expanding it.

Strengths

  • Kachousen gives her a projectile-supported way to begin offense instead of relying exclusively on an uncovered approach.
  • The guide offers carry routes and different follow-ups for her finishers, making screen position part of the reward for a hit.

Weaknesses

  • Boosted and ordinary special routes have different resource conditions. Always practicing with the boost available hides the fallback you need.
  • A grounded Shinobi Bachi finish is not the same as hitting an airborne opponent. The next approach must match the route used.

Best range / preferred gameplan

Use the fan to prepare movement toward a grounded confirm. Choose a finish that gives the carry or knockdown you have practiced, then check the boost state before extending. Near the corner, keep the exact juggle conditions attached to the follow-up instead of improvising from the move name alone.

Key tools to learn first

Kachousen

Compare ordinary and OD fan use in the guide’s routes. Learn what movement you intend to take while the projectile supports the approach.

Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi

Begin with a listed light-version finish, recording whether it connects on a grounded or airborne opponent.

Ryuuenbu

Use the current guide’s conversion conditions, especially for OD routes, rather than borrowing an older extension by memory.

Beginner practice order

  1. Practice an unboosted route

Disable the boost resource and complete one simple grounded conversion so you have a reliable baseline.

  2. Separate the Shinobi finishes

Reproduce the grounded light-version knockdown and its follow-up before practicing the airborne alternative.

  3. Add a fan-supported entry

Record a defender holding ground or moving forward. Use Kachousen and practice recognizing whether there is room to follow it.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a boosted extension without checking whether the resource is present.
  • Applying the same dash timing to grounded and airborne Shinobi Bachi finishes.

COMBO PRACTICE NOTES

MAI: choosing and practising your routes

Mai practice separates grounded Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi routes from air routes using Musasabi no Mai. Learning pressure after light Shinobi Bachi gives the basic combo a clear follow-up.

Strength to build around

Offense supported by projectiles such as Kachousen is a strength.

Limitation to plan for

Responses to retaliation are a concern; practise when to stop as well as continue pressure.

What to learn first

Stabilise crouching LK into crouching LP and light Shinobi Bachi, then add the crouching MP starter. Practise OD Shinobi Bachi into jumping MP separately.

Turn the route into a match decision

Do not mix up throw, back HK, and shimmy choices after light Shinobi Bachi with the jump setup after Musasabi. Check corner forward-throw pressure in its own section.

These practice notes follow the published guide and combo material. Check the combo page for route conditions and the frame table for move values.

MAI video lessons

Mai’s collection includes move demonstrations, combo and setplay lessons, and match footage. The Ken-versus-Mai compilation specifically discusses OD and charged Kachousen.

Original video titles and Japanese commentary are preserved. Balance-update opinions and numerical examples belong to the version recorded; use the linked frame and combo pages for current reference data.
