PLAYING DEE JAY

Character overview

Dee Jay turns a successful approach into either a compact Sobat conversion or a more involved Jackknife route. His Drive Rush is an important entry, but the useful learning target is what happens after it connects. Start with one grounded confirm and a recognizable finish before chasing extended damage.

Strengths

  • Drive Rush supports sudden entries that can lead into his close-range conversion game.
  • His Jackknife knockdowns and corner routes connect damage to rehearsed pressure, giving a reason to learn a particular ender.

Weaknesses

  • The extended damage routes add meter and execution demands. Spending for a route you cannot complete loses more than choosing a compact finish.
  • Ground and airborne Jackknife finishes are different practice situations. Borrowing a follow-up from the wrong one makes the approach inconsistent.

Best range / preferred gameplan

Look for a grounded opening that can become standing medium punch pressure or a confirmed route. Use a short Sobat finish while learning; progress to Jackknife carry when you can also use the resulting knockdown. At the corner, keep the specific juggle and jump timing together.

Key tools to learn first

Standing medium punch

The guide starts a situation-focused route with this button, then standing light kick into heavy Sobat.

Jackknife Maximum

Learn to prepare charge inside the selected combo. Record whether the finish hits a grounded or airborne opponent.

Jus Cool

Treat its branches as a later extension of a known starter. Begin with one listed OD conversion rather than all possible follow-ups.

Beginner practice order

  1. Keep a compact conversion

Rehearse standing medium punch, standing light kick and heavy Sobat, then test the listed close strike or throw choice.

  2. Add a Jackknife route

Practice the guide’s carry route into heavy Jackknife with input history visible so you can diagnose missing charge.

  3. Compare corner timing

Set up the listed corner juggle and its Knee Shot follow-up separately from the grounded Jackknife sequence.

Common mistakes

  • Using raw Drive Rush repeatedly without learning a dependable conversion when it works.
  • Applying a grounded Jackknife knockdown setup to an airborne corner finish without checking the timing.

COMBO PRACTICE NOTES

DEE JAY: choosing and practising your routes

Dee Jay practice distinguishes Double Rolling Sobat strengths and other enders such as Jackknife Maximum by the pressure that follows.

Strength to build around

Corner jump setups and block pressure are strengths.

Limitation to plan for

The assessment flags limited whiff-punish reward. Check both the move’s reach and its conversion.

What to learn first

Start with standing LP into crouching LP and medium Sobat, then standing MP into standing LK and heavy Sobat. Study the medium Sobat route into SA3 separately.

Turn the route into a match decision

The jump setup after heavy Jackknife and the Knee Shot setup after Sobat are not interchangeable. Identify the ender before choosing its wake-up sequence.

These practice notes follow the published guide and combo material. Check the combo page for route conditions and the frame table for move values.
